The recovery of Steve Fossett’s plane and possibly his remains closes the book on one of the biggest adventure mysteries in recent memory. But if this is the sad end to his saga, he could hardly have ended up in a more spectacular resting place: The section of the Ansel Adams Wilderness where he was found remains one of the most rugged and scenic spots in the eastern Sierra:
The crash site lies near an area known as the Minarets, which is filled with high alpine lakes, granite cliff faces, and 13,000-foot peaks. It’s too early to know if Fossett’s crash site will ever become a pilgrimage site like Chris McCandless’ Magic Bus near Denali.
