That may look like a headset from Halo, but it’s Garmin’s DC 30 — a GPS-enabled collar for your dog. That’s right, your dog. So if Spot has the unfortunate habit of taking off without warning, leaving you running around the neighborhood yelling at midnight with a flashlight and a jar of Peanut Butter, slap one of these bad boys on him. Then kick back on the couch while the DC 30 beams his position to you every 5 seconds. He’ll eventually tire himself out, and you can go pick him up.

You can alter the position transmit rate from 5 to 10 or 30 seconds, enabling the device to last up to 36 hours. I’d be interested to put it on a dog, set him loose, and just see what he gets up to. We’ve always thought the family dog would up and take off back to Alaska if we ever let her off leash — now we have a way of safely finding out.

Come to think of it, there’s plenty of non-canine uses for the collar: cat pranks, toddlers in malls, untrustworthy significant others…I should probably stop now.
