Happy Halloween, backpackers and backpackerettes! While today will be infested with all manner of scary ghosts, ghouls, and vampire Sarah Palins, at BACKPACKER we know that none of those can match the terror of an unforgiving wilderness out to swallow you whole.
To that end, BACKPACKER’s October Survival Issue is free and online, just in time for Halloween. So gather the kiddies, sit them down next to the eerie blue glow of the computer monitor in a darkened room, and prepare to blow their minds with these harrowing tales of survival.
They’ll gasp when they hear about who lives and dies in the roaring Alaskan streams, brutal Colorado snowstorms, and bone-crushing boulders of “When Disaster Strikes.” They’ll cower as you tick off Mother Nature’s most horrible demons in “The Terror Index.” And when they hear about our man’s mental struggle with survival, Hollywood-style, in “I Will Survive,” they just might lose their little minds, too.
When you’re finished scaring the bejesus out of them, plan your own frightening trek through America’s 10 Most Dangerous Hikes. Y’know, if you’re man or woman enough…
