Appalachian Mountain Club Purchases Baker Mountain
The purchase protects 4,311 acres in Maine's 100-Mile Wilderness.

The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) has purchased scenic and ecologically significant lands on and around Baker Mountain in the 100-mile wilderness near Greenville, Maine, giving the the conservation organization greater ability to protect the ecologically fragile area.
“Baker Mountain was surrounded by conservation lands, but the Baker Mountain tract itself was not protected,” AMC Senior Vice President Walter Graff said in a statement. “It was ‘the hole in the doughnut,’ and with this purchase, AMC and its conservation partner, [The Nature Conservancy], have ensured that this ecologically significant land will be protected,”
The newly purchased land will be managed for recreational, habitat protection, and sustainable forestry practices. It includes not only Baker Mountain, the second highest peak in Maine, but also the headwaters of the West Branch of the Pleasant River, which is a wild brook trout fishery. The AMC also plans to provide pedestrian access to the area.
These purchases are something of a milestone for the AMC. The organization now holds some some 70,000 acres of conservation and recreation land holdings in the 100-Mile Wilderness region.
