No one likes carrying a bear canister. Yes, they’re more foolproof than hanging a bear bag and (a lot) safer than sleeping with your food. But Tetris-ing a week’s worth of food into a heavy, hard cylinder and then shoving that into your backpack is never going to be fun. Like flossing or doing your taxes, it’s one of those unpleasant tasks we deal with because the alternative is worse.
The Ursack AllMitey is a food storage alternative for bear country that has many of the perks of a canister while eliminating some of the drawbacks. The AllMitey is Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee-approved and resistant to smaller animals as well, so you don’t have to worry about shelter mice making off with your gorp. It can fit 10.65 liters—that’s roughly 5 days of food for one person, or a weekend’s worth for you and your partner—and at 9.5 ounces, it weighs roughly a quarter of what a comparable canister does. (Note that Ursacks are approved food storage in some national parks and wilderness areas, banned in others, and allowed only with an aluminum insert in several more. Check the rules for wherever you plan on taking yours before you commit, and consider bringing a scent-blocking liner to reduce the chance of a bear trying to carry yours off.)
