With early Labor Day sales in full swing, it’s a good time to snag a deal on that big-ticket item you’ve been eyeing. One we have our eyes on right now: The Exped Megamat, the double version of which set the high-water mark for comfort in this year’s sleeping pad test.
At 4 inches thick the Megamat sleeps like a true mattress, with side-sleeping testers reporting that it was even comfortable partially inflated. “Case in point: One tester slept on the Megamat Duo for seven straight days on a camping trip in Crescent City, California, then slept on it in a guest bedroom at home for two more weeks,” our reviewer reported. For this year’s updated model, Exped cut out 30% of the foam, preserving the pad’s toasty 8.1 R-value while making it more packable and lighter. Caveat: At 4 pounds, 9 ounces and 7.9 by 26.5 inches packed, this is still going to be a basecamping pad for all but the most comfort-obsessed backpackers.
