As anyone who’s ever navigated a talus field by moonlight can tell you, there’s a reason that a light is one of the ten essentials. Whether you’re carrying it on light-and-fast weekend trips or tucking it in your pocket on after-work jaunts, every hiker should have a lightweight headlamp in their arsenal. At a mere 1.5 ounces, the SOL Venture Rechargeable Headlamp is featherweight, yet packs in a full suite of standard-issue lighting modes, including flood, focus, and red lights. At a max output of 140 lumens, it proved perfect for around-camp tasks on an Editors’ Choice trip to Panama’s Parque Internacional La Amistad. It’s just bright enough for hiking at a relaxed pace, though we’d suggest a brighter model if you’re planning on making miles after dark. A tradeoff for that light weight: Its battery isn’t especially powerful. Expect to get about an hour and a half at full power, or up to 20 on low.
