Nice: sitting around a warm campfire with your friends in the cool night air. Not so nice: stinging, burning smoke in your eyes. If you’re consistently your group’s smoke magnet (it’s a thing, look it up), a smokeless fire pit might be a good investment for you. At its simplest, smoke is uncombusted particles of wood floating in the air; by boosting the oxygen available to your fire, smokeless fire pits reduce the amount of it. They can also reduce your impact by replacing a fire ring, giving you another easy way to light up your blaze where safe and allowed. If you’re looking for a solid smokeless pit for your fall adventures, two of our three favorites are on sale right now at a third or more off their full price.
BioLite FirePit+ — $200 (33% off)
If you were a viewer of our live Friday night campfire streams, you’ve seen the BioLite FirePit+ in action. The FirePit+ fits four standard-size wood logs and can keep the flames going and the smoke banished with a built-in, three-speed fan that’s Bluetooth-controllable via an app on your phone; the included battery pack can keep it running for up to 30 hours on low and charge your devices to boot. In our test, the pit’s mesh construction seemed to keep the fire aerated and provided better visibility for the flames. For campsite cookouts, the FirePit+ can pull double duty as a grill—just load it up with charcoal and top it with the included grate. At just under 20 pounds, the FirePit+ is fairly light for a smokeless fire pit, and foldable legs made it easy to pack.
Solo Stove Bonfire 2.0 — $250 (37% off)
Sleek and simple is the name of the game with this low-profile, low-smoke fire pit. Rather than a powered fan, the bonfire relies on three rows of holes around the bottom to funnel in oxygen, resulting in a quick-lighting, consistently-burning fire that won’t leave circling it with your chair, looking for a gap in the haze. “After a half a dozen fires burning everything from freshly chopped logs to store-bought wood (and even a questionable mangled pallet) the lack of smoke is remarkable,” our reviewers wrote after their test. Nice touch: A removable ash pan allows you to easily clean the bonfire when you’re done. At 23 pounds, it’s a hair heavier than the BioLite, but still more than manageable for car-camping trips.
