How can I recycle old polyester fiberfill sleeping bags to keep them out of the landfill?

I consulted with several experts to find the best solution here. (We all give you a standing ovation for trying to keep your old bag out of the dump!) I couldn’t find any recycling facilities that will accept bags. (Caveat: The company Golite will currently take back any of their bags and store them until recycling options become available. My guess is that other green-minded companies might do the same.) But there’s an even better options that recycling: repurposing. The best thing you can do for the environment is to keep it in circulation. You have several options:

[] Donate it! Animal shelters and homeless shelters are always looking for bedding material.

[] Gift a scout. Local scout troops are always more than happy to accept any and all used camping gear.

[] Google it. Plug in “donate sleeping bag” and you’ll get 172,000 (and counting) hits. People definitely want your old—but cozy—pile of fluff!
