I have a friend going to an altitude much higher than where he lives. Is there any way to train to be better prepared?

Unfortunately, there is no way to train specifically to prepare for altitude gain—unless you work out in a sealed chamber in which you can simulate the lower oxygen levels of altitude gain. But a high level of cardiorespiratory fitness will certainly boost the chances of having fun up high. The main thing to tell your friend is to take plenty of time for gaining altitude to allow acclimatization. Above 10,000 feet elevation, most experts will tell you to gain no more than 1,000 to 1,500 feet of sleeping altitude per 24 hours. Also, take a rest day every few days, and drink plenty of water. —Buck
