What is the best way to get rid of leftover white gas, before I get on the plane to fly home?
Answer:
It’s a pesky dilemma, Chris. Obviously, we can’t fly with fuel. In fact, these days, if your empty stove or bottles retain even the slightest whiff of gas, airport folks are likely to confiscate it–you can kiss it goodbye forever. I have a few ideas for getting rid of unused fuel, though. The best solution is to find a fellow hiker who could put it to good use–someone you meet at a campground or getting ready to hike in at the trailhead. I’ve also been able to dispose of it at local gas stations or garages-they often have big waste tanks for oil changes. As for packing the fuel bottles, just wash them out with hot, soapy water and leave the caps off–it’s amazing how that kills the gassy smell.
