When you’re going gourmet or basecamp cooking for a crew of six, a well-appointed set of utensils like this one is worth its weight in single malt. Everything you’ll need is packed into a sturdy hard-sided case (8 x 6 x 3 inches), and we used every piece of it on a series of fine-dining and assembly-line-feeding trips from Iceland to Vermont: the foldable cutting board (10.5 x 7 inches); the collapsing serving spoon and flipper; the salt and pepper shaker; the two squeeze bottles (we used them for olive oil and hot sauce); the bottle opener; and the dish brush/scraper.
Our faves: the clever cheese grater/pasta strainer (pictured, center) and the sharp, 4.5-inch chef’s knife, which we used to chop garlic and crack open freshly harvested mussels for one meal. Invest in this set and pull key pieces from it when you’re packing lighter.
