One tester gave this dish the ultimate compliment: “I wouldn’t have known this was freeze-dried,” he said, shoveling spoonfuls into his mouth after an all-day hike. The vegan meal provides complete protein (17 grams) by combining beans and rice (both simple proteins) in a light, sweet-savory, Caribbean-inspired, coconut- and banana-flavored sauce.

The hearty, fiber-rich (30 grams), and carb-heavy (88 grams) meal left testers full-bellied and satisfied—though some suggested adding a packet of chicken for a chunky boost, and hot sauce (not included) to balance the fruity base. $7 (2 servings); 9.8 oz.; backpackerspantry.com
