Our take A beanie is just a beanie, right? Not when it has the feature set of the Howler Markus Skully. For hikers who struggle to keep sunglasses in a comfortable position without letting the cold in, this cap has small slits on the temple to hold your shades steady. We found that our sunnies stayed put, even when we were bounding downhill. Testers also praised the laser-cut holes over the ears, which maintain hearing but don’t result in heat loss.

The details A panel on the back means the Howler Markus Skully fits most head sizes, and ensures the cap stays in place. And even though this hat is light, its fleece membrane kept our tester warm in sub-zero temps in Montana’s Anaconda Range.

Trail cred “With 30-mph winds blasting me in the face on Mt. Haggin in the Anacondas, the holes over my ears allowed me to hear my climbing partner while he called out foot placements on an icy ledge,” our tester says.
