Question:

Will white vinegar (used to clean camping kitchen gear) attract bears?

Submitted by – -John, White Plains, NY

Answer:

Here’s the short answer: It ain’t likely.

Here’s more: Black bears have actually run away when sprayed with vinegar.

How a griz would react is not known. Vinegar evaporates quickly when exposed to air, especially after being smeared on something. I would not consider vinegar a bear repellent, but I also would not list it high as an attractant. The smell of you will be much more attractive—so take standard bear precautions. —BUCK
