Smartwool Smartloft

The best value gloves from the Fall/Winter 2018 Gear Guide.

Brand: SmartWool

Model: Smartloft

None

When you don’t need more, why pay more? In moderate terrain and weather, the SmartLoft kept our fingers warm and dry, using merino to do so—at a surprisingly low price. It pairs a DWR-treated, nylon-polyester outer with a moisture-grabbing merino-poly interior, making it breathe well enough to hike in, while also cutting wind on ski descents. Wool insulation kept our tester’s digits warm on a day in the mid-20s at Colorado’s Berthoud Pass, but the glove wasn’t too bulky to adjust his splitboard settings. Caveat: They’re not as durable as more expensive gloves.

TRAIL CRED

“These gloves are so light—and pack down to the size of a peach—that I keep them in my pack year-round,” our Colorado tester says.

Weight: 2.5 oz.

Sizes: XS-XL;
