Wolf Kills Cow, Worrying NorCal Ranchers

The incident was the first confirmed wolf kill in California for more than a century.

The discovery of the Lassen Pack in Northern California last July set some local ranchers on edge as they worried about wolves preying on their cattle. And in mid-October, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife confirmed a Lassen Pack wolf had killed a cow in Lassen County. Wildlife officials argued that such incidents are rare, but the lack of a compensation system for wolf kills in the state raised concerns among ranchers in the area.
