Happy weekend, Denver hikers!
Good news: The sunshine is back! And so is the heat. For those wanting to bask in the warmth, stay closer to the Front Range for dayhiking around Kenosha Pass, Golden, and the Boulder trails (daytime temps will hang in the 80s there). If you’re like me and prefer to escape the heat, head to Indian Peaks or Rocky Mountain NP for dayhikes or overnights with perfect daytime temps in the mid-60s. If you’re overnighting, I wouldn’t pack the summer sleeping bag just yet--once the sun dips down, the mercury will still drop to the 40s or below.
Though most of the 14ers and higher-elevation trails will still have plenty of snowy patches, this weekend provides ample opportunity to explore the high country. If you’re itching for a good, high alpine adventure, get after it this weekend! Just remember to start early to avoid wet avalanches and unnecessary postholing. Trails in the foothills are plenty dry, but the alpine is still snowy and muddy--wear your waterproof hiking boots, and have fun!
