North Dakota Trails
The Great Plains cover about half of North Dakota, while the Badlands — a stretch of vibrant buttes, domes and hills — cover the southwest area of the state. The two regions meet at Theodore Roosevelt National Park, popular for wildlife viewing (including bison, coyotes, and cougars), as well as backcountry hiking and horseback riding. The Red River Valley, a stretch of very flat and fertile land, extends along the state’s border with Minnesota.
