Summer in the Hudson Highlands Hike

Publish date:

Group: AMC NY-North Jersey

When: Saturday, July 15, 10:15 am

Where: Cold Spring, NY

Cost: Free

Details: Enjoy a summer day in the Hudson Highlands on a 7 mile hike where we do most of our uphill ascent in the morning, when it is cooler, on trails with beautiful views of the Hudson River and surrounding mountains, as we make our way to a particularly scenic lunch spot on the ridge. There will be plenty of time afterwards to relax in Cold Spring, and visit the galleries, have a drink or meal in the restaurants, and of course go to Moo Moos, for the best ice cream, along the waterfront promenade. The hike takes us a part of the way up Mount Taurus on the Washburn trail, where we switch to the Undercliff trail to get up to Breakneck Ridge (we do not climb the face of Breakneck). After a walk along the ridge, we descend on the Notch trail and then on to the Brook and Cornish woods roads trails back to the starting point in Cold Spring. There are trains back to Manhattan at least every hour on the Metro North Hudson line. We will hike at a steady, moderate 3 level (not fast, but definitely not slow) pace over a distance of 7 miles, with some steep hills on hiking trails with varied terrain. Cumulative elevation gain will be approximately 2100 feet. There are no special skills or equipment required, other than to wear hiking boots, and have at least 2-3 quarts of water/sports drinks along with lunch. However, hikers should be in good condition to complete a fairly strenuous hike (Per AMC policy, please no dogs, unless indicated otherwise).
