Group: Atlanta Outdoor Club
When: Friday, August 31, 8:30 am
Where: Stone Mountain Park, GA
We will start the morning with a hike up to the top of Stone Mountain. We will start our walk at 8:30 am. After enjoying view from the top of the mountain, we will hike down the mountain and turn onto the Cherokee Trail. The plan is to set a moderate pace on the 5.5 mile Cherokee Trail which circles the mountain. Along the way, we'll pass the "Fireplace," an assortment of lakes, a gristmill, a historic covered bridge, a vintage single-wide trailer, and of course great views of the Mountain. Although most of the hike is along wooded trails, we do walk over several patches of exposed granite which can be fun and dangerous at the same time. Please make sure you wear appropriate footwear with good traction so that you can tackle the (slick-when-wet) granite. The moderate pace is designed to keep the group together, allow for plenty of photo ops, and promote deep breathing!
