The Sacramento, California area is packed with excellent hiking and backpacking opportunities. When hiking near Sacramento, head North to hike the 4.7 mile Sierra Buttes Fire Lookout trail (~2.5 hour drive) or Southeast for the 5.9 mile Pinecrest Lake Loop (~2.5 hour drive). Sacramento backpackers looking for an easy overnight (or day hikers hoping to kill a Saturday) should give the 8.8 mile Redbud trail out-and-back a chance, located West of the city (~1.5 hour drive). Some of Sacramento's best hikes are found in El Dorado National Forest's Desolation Wilderness (~2 hour drive), an alpine wilderness along the PCT.
