The Department of State awarded $668,385 in conservation grants to Long Island communities this month, the first time such funds have been allocated. Hempstead raked in the most money; the $200,000 grant will fund a diamondback terrapin survey, reef construction at Lido Beach, living shoreline projects, studies on pollution and salt marshes, and improving access to the South Shore Blueway Trail.
