Where: Breakneck Ridge Parking Lot, Hudson River Valley, NY

Cost: Free

Details: Enjoy a beautiful day in the Hudson Highlands where among other things, we get to see ruins of the old Casino and incline railway on Beacon Mountain, as well as commanding views of the surrounding mountains and Hudson River from the Wilkinson trail and Fire Tower. The hike ends in Beacon where we can explore a vibrant Main Street with unique shops, diverse places to eat, and galleries to explore. At least hourly train service back to Manhattan is provided on the scenic Metro-North Hudson line. After a brief shuttle to Beacon (we do not hike on Breakneck Ridge), we ascend the Casino trail, a woods road with sustained elevation gain of about 1000 feet, but no rock scrambling. After reaching the top of Mount Beacon, we continue along the Casino trail, with a short detour to the Fire Tower, until we reach the Wilkinson Trail, which goes along a ridge with many viewpoints. We then connect with the Fishkill Ridge trail, which takes us up Lamb's Hill and back to the starting point. We will hike at a steady, moderate 3 level (not fast, but definitely not slow) pace over a distance of 8 miles, with some steep hills on hiking trails with varied terrain. Cumulative elevation gain will be approximately 2300 feet. There are no special skills or equipment required, other than to wear hiking boots, and have at least 2-3 quarts of water/sports drinks along with lunch. However, hikers should be in good condition to complete a fairly strenuous hike. (Per AMC policy, please no dogs, unless indicated otherwise). Rain or even questionable forecast may cancel or modify; check website for latest updates. We meet at 9:15 in the Breakneck Ridge Parking Lot, where we arrange a brief shuttle to Beacon. The transportation information for both public transportation leaving from Grand Central and cars (AMC Trans code: 5E (early train) on the AMC New York-North Jersey website) is indicated below. Please purchase a one way ticket since there may be rides back to the city offered, and arrive a bit early to allow time to purchase tickets, and getting to the proper gate. 5. 7:43 a.m. METRO-NORTH RR http://www.mta.info/schedules) Poughkeepsie train from GCT.
