San Francisco, CA: Bay Area Ridge Trail

See Shaky Town from a whole new perspective.
Publish date:

The Bay Area Ridge Trail, still a work in progress, will eventually encircle the San Francisco Bay with more than 500 miles of ridgetop trails. This 21.6-mile shuttle hike on one of its newest segments follows San Geronimo Ridge from Samuel P. Taylor State Park to Big Rock Summit, the second-highest point in Marin County. Begin on the Cross-Marin Trail in the state park for 2 miles of flat, wooded trail before ascending to Geronimo Ridge Rd. for great views of the bay and Mt. Tamalpais. Reach Brown Bridge at 10.7 miles and enjoy distant views of West Marin, San Pablo Bay, and the city over the next 3.7 miles to Big Rock Pass. From here, it's a 3.6-mile climb on the Big Rock Trail to Big Rock Ridge. Take in the views near the radio antennaes, then backtrack to your shuttle vehicle.
