Stories like this don’t always have a happy ending: A young solo hiker gets turned around on a day trip and vanishes into the wilderness. But seven days after 23-year-old Madeline Connelly did just that in May, rescuers found her and her dog, Mogi, unhurt in Montana’s Great Bear Wilderness. In an interview with The Chicago Tribune, Connelly details how she ate glacier lilies, scouted for clean water, and avoided hypothermia despite wearing just a sweatshirt and overalls in the freezing subalpine terrain.
