South Dakota’s Rapid City boasts close to 20 miles of trail that can be accessed straight from downtown. As outdoorsy types, we think there’s a lot to be said for such great accessibility of easy to expert hiking and mountain biking from inside city limits.
The trails crisscross through the Skyline Wilderness Park, an area protected from development and thick with pine. At the top of the Skyline Trail we saw the park’s namesake with all of Rapid City spreading out in the plains below. Last year, nearly 300 people joined in to celebrate the Fat Tire Festival in Skyline Park: the event challenges mountain bikers in a cross country race, downhill style race, and even a hill climb. The city has big plans to continue expanding the trails as interest in outdoor sports in the Black Hills area continues to grow.
