Oak wilt, a fungus deadly to oak trees, has been detected in Schenectady County this month; Brooklyn, Long Island, and Canandaigua are also trouble spots in the region. Officials are removing about 100 trees to try to restrict its spread. Oak wilt, which is spread by beetles, can kill red oaks in a matter of weeks.
