New Species of Flying Squirrel Discovered in Northwest

University of Washington researchers helped identify North America's third known type of the tree-dwelling animal.

It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a...brand-new-to-science Humboldt's flying squirrel! UW and Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture recently identified this distinct coastal species through DNA analysis. The Humboldt's flying squirrel lives on the Pacific Northwest coast from British Columbia to Southern California.
