The Nantahala National Forest in North Carolina added the valuable, 50-acre Fires Creek parcel to its land holdings this month after private owners reached a deal to sell their inholding. Not only does the sale protect the ecologically important Fires Creek watershed, it also enables rangers to route the popular Fires Creek Rim Trail back to its original ridgetop.
