Logan Canyon—with its 3,000-foot walls and resident deer, coyote, and moose—is a dramatic destination anytime, but come spring, the area gets even more scenic. Snowmelt turns the swift Logan River into a whitewater torrent, and the rare Maguire’s primrose blooms on the cliffs overhead. Get close to the season’s highlights on this easy 7.4-mile out-and-back. Grab a rod and trace the river up the canyon—great fishing awaits at Second Dam, a little more than 1 mile in. Continue another 1.5 miles to reach Third Dam, another prime spot to cast for brown and rainbow trout. Hike on to Spring Hollow Campground, your turnaround point, or climb another 800 feet in 3 miles on the Crimson Trail from Third Dam. Hug the rim of a vertical cliff known as China Wall before retracing your steps back down the canyon.
