Construction of the South Mountain Freeway is set to begin across three peaks in South Mountain Park, the Arizona Department of Transportation announced. The Gila River Indian Community and a number of other tribes strenuously opposed the $1.7 billion freeway because many consider South Mountain a sacred site.
