The Highline Trail, a historic 1800s-era route turned national scenic trail, suffered from serious neglect, erosion, and wildfire scarring before a recent restoration project kicked into gear in 2012. Volunteers for Outdoor Arizona and the Tonto National Forest have rerouted parts of the trail, improved dangerous stretches, and added a bridge over the East Verde River; future goals include adding miles and stabilizing shaky sections.
