Tragedy struck the popular Cold Springs swimming hole on the Verde River system near Payson Saturday when a sudden flash flood killed nine people. Most victims were members of an extended family from Phoenix. The risk of flash floods is especially high right now because recent Arizona wildfires have removed vegetation, making the monsoon season even more dangerous.
