About the Hike:

his 7-Mile hike is quite challenging, even for seasoned hikers there is quite a large amount of elevation gain. But, the easy pace will make the up hills more comfortable and well worth the scenic rewards at the top. We'll start at the parking area north of Cold Spring off of 9D, this can be walked to from the train station at Cold Spring. Heading north on the Cornish Trail the first few miles are a good flat warm up where the ruins of the Cornish Estate off to the left of the trail make for a good stop to do a little exploring. After a small brook crossing we'll leave Cornish Trail to traverse the Undercliff trail for our first scenic view and major climb which brings us up Breakneck Ridge. Prepare for a bit of a rock scramble going up Breakneck Ridge but it will be well worth the view from the top. After traversing Breakneck Ridge we'll jump onto Notch Trail to bring us back down to a swampy brook and some more ruins of the Cornish Estate. Following a small brook up a gradual uphill we'll make a sharp right onto Washburn Trail to head south up the back of Mt. Taurus and what will be our second big climb of the day. While less steep than our first one this is a slightly longer sustained climb over a series of switchbacks, but if taken at an easy pace can be accomplished by most. We're rewarded with sever great scenic vistas from the top. We'll finish our hike down Washburn Trail over a continuous decent that will offer up two final good views before arriving back at the parking area.
