Climb over steep, granite-littered slopes and narrow canyons, and spy a herd of wild horses in Nevada’s Inyo National Forest on this 9-mile out-and-back to 13,104-foot Boundary Peak. Start at the Trail Canyon kiosk and head 2.2 miles west to an obvious saddle at the creek’s south side. Go south 1.5 miles and bear left at the fork. Continue .7 mile up a steep slope and follow the cairns along a 1,200-foot ascent that starts with switchbacks Hike SE to the primary ridgeline, then SW to the summit. Option: Bag Montgomery Peak by hiking down the ridge to a saddle. Pass the final rock outcrop, hike along the east side trail, then climb back to the ridge and remain on the exposed crest.
