Even well-meaning hikers sometimes misunderstand the Leave No Trace ethics designed to keep the wilderness pristine. Phoenix Park Ranger Chris Webb and Keep Arizona Beautiful’s Jill Bernstein cleared up some of the most common issues they see in local parks to AZ Central. Among them: Thinking fruit and cigarette butts are OK to toss (the former hurts wildlife, and the latter isn’t biodegradable), not following fire restrictions, and helping yourself to a plant souvenir.
