New Brierwood Nature Preserve Opens in Hawthorn Woods

An undiscovered 12-acre plot has become a new preserve, which will be a sanctuary for monarch butterflies.

The new Brierwood Nature Preserve will be a sanctuary for the monarch butterfly, a declining species.

When Hawthorn Woods officials decided to create a monarch sanctuary, they looked around for a suitable spot—and found an area of untouched native forest. After clearing out non-native buckthorn and planting perennials like milkweed and wild columbine, the new Brierwood Nature Preserve opened to the public.
