The Best Day Hikes in America: Berry Creek Falls

Big Basin Redwoods State Park, Northern California

California’s oldest state park hides champion old-growth redwoods in tight gorges and steep, mossy canyons threaded with waterfalls. It rivals anything found in Redwoods or Sequoia National Parks—and it’s a mere hour and a half from the Bay Area.

Link the Sunset, Berry Creek Falls, and Skyline-to-Sea Trails into an 11-mile loop that climbs through young redwood forest and dense tanoak before descending to a valley of sorrel and ferns. Pass hopscotching Berry Creek Falls at mile 6, then loop back through Waddell Creek Canyon, home to the biggest redwoods in the park.
