Backcountry Ski: Mt. Ruth via Inter Glacier

Group: Seattle Outdoor Adventurers

When: Saturday, May 19, 6 am-9 pm

Where: Mt. Rainier National Park, WA

Cost: Free/$15 suggested donation to carpool drivers (RSVP)

Details: Who: Intermediate (skiing skill level) backcountry Skiers/Splitboarders who:

1) are in excellent cardio condition and
2) have completed at least 2 prior backcountry ski tours involving a minimum of 3,500' of elevation gain.

Ski approach: hike 3.5 miles with 1,300' of elevation to Glacier Basin Camp (http://www.nps.gov/mora/planyourvisit/glacier-basin.htm). Bring hiking boots for the easy approach.

Max group size: 8

Permit: Vehicle National Park Service

Avalanche safety gear: beacon, probe, and shovel

Avalanche training: AIARE level 1 (or above) preferred. Minimum: Avalanche awareness training which included in-the-field simulated rescue training.

Recommended mountaineering gear: Ski crampons. Ice ax or Black Diamond Whippet.

Navigation gear: I am bringing map, compass, altimeter, navigation wands, and GPS. Ideally, at least one other skier will be equipped with a GPS.

Distance: 11 miles round-trip

Elevation gain: 4,500 feet

Pace: 1,000 ft of elevation gain per hour

Duration: ~5.5 hour ascent and ~2.5 hour descent

Drive duration from park-n-ride to trailhead: 2 hours

Carpooling and fuel reimbursement: Riders please bring $15 cash (10 cents/mile) to compensate your driver.
