Fall foliage near Lake Placid, NY, is a huge draw over Columbus Day weekend.

Due to issues of overcrowding, three popular trailheads in the Adirondacks—Cascade, Porter, and Pitchof Mountain West—will be closed on October 5–9. State officials plan to redirect hikers to the Mt. Van Hoevenberg Sports Complex, 1.3 miles west of the current traihead.
