The Northern Lights are coming to a dark sky near you (if you live in the northern states). Over the past 21 years, more auroras have been recorded in October in the U.S. than any other month. Add the fact that the last solar cycle ended in 2014—and aurora activity peaks two years after the end of a solar cycle (ask a meteorologist). So head out on a clear, dark night in a remote park away from light pollution. Good bets: Baxter in Maine, Pictured Rocks in Michigan, and Priest Lake in Idaho. Find an unobstructed northern vista and scan for the dancing greens and reds.
