Duck the crowded High Peaks region, a hot spot we can’t help but cover a few times each year, and head north to a remote corner of 2.5-million-acre Adirondack State Park. Jenkins Mountain Trail leaves the Paul Smiths Visitor Interpretive Center for an 8.2-mile out-and-back. Keep an eye out for beaver dams and some of the 300 species of birds, like the gray jay and the broad-winged hawk. Reach the 2,477-foot summit of Jenkins Mountain after 4.1 miles. It’s also a sweet winter snowshoe route (deep snow and silent woods).
