Three deep canyons. One 600-foot cascade. Sounds like this 11-miler should have been in BACKPACKER. With the Medicine Bow, Snowy Range, and Wind Rivers nearby, perhaps we were distracted. From the trailhead off US 14, pass through skyscraping stands of lodgepole, Douglas fir, and Engelmann spruce along the south rim of Bucking Mule Canyon.
At mile one, reach an overlook of the thundering falls. Next up, Devil’s Canyon at mile 6.5, and then Porcupine Canyon, before ascending 1,200 feet to views over the canyonscape. If overnighting, camp at Porcupine ($13, 16 sites, no reservations).
