Trail Chef: A Brave New S'more

A rite of passage in the camping world, s’mores date back to at least 1927, when the recipe appeared in a Girl Scout publication—though the magic mixture of graham, chocolate, and marshmallow likely existed well before that. Also, the original name was “Some More” (perhaps Oliver Twist had a hand in it?). But, with all due respect to the classic s’more, it’s nice to vary things now and again. In that spirit, reader Dicentra of shares this gourmet adaption:

* Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup

* Peppermint Pattie

* Peeps

* Peanut butter and banana slices

* Dried mango and coconut shavings

Can’t make a fire? Make S’mores in a bag: 

At home, mix together 1/2 cup crumbled graham crackers (about 1 1/2 crackers), 1/4 cup chocolate chips, and 1/4 cup chopped walnuts (toasted), and evenly divide the mixture into two small oven-roasting bags. In camp, squeeze the air out of the bags, close them tightly, and dunk them in hot water until the chocolate has melted. Remove the bags from the water, grab a spoon, and dig into gooey yumminess.
