A 16-year-old Colorado National Monument visitor fell 100 feet to his death Tuesday.
FOX 31 Denver reports that Marcos Alejandro Camacho Guillen was beyond the guardrail at the Independence Monument rock formation when he lost his balance and fell on to a ledge below the overlook. According to theDenver Post, rescue personnel rapelled down to the ledge and and tended to the victim, but were unable to revive him due to severe blunt force trauma to his chest and abdomen.
Lisa Eckert, the monument's superintendent, speculated that high winds in the area may have caused the fall. It is the park's second fatality in the past 12 months; last September, 27-year-old Matt Moore also crossed a guardrail and fell to his death.
