A little while ago, Google Maps issued a challenge to the major cities of America to get their public transit routes to them in time for Earth Day. With this info, Google Maps users could then plot their directions from place to place using only mass transit. Take that, carbon emissions and rush-hour traffic! Several cities made the cut, including:
- San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency
- Regional Transportation District (Denver/Boulder, CO)
- Kansas City Area Transportation Authority
- Milwaukee County Transit System
- Macatawa Area Express (Holland, MI)
- Ann Arbor Transportation Authority
- Rhode Island Public Transit Authority
- MetroWest Regional Transit Authority (Framingham, MA)
- Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority
- Valley Transit: (Walla Walla, Washington)
- Grape Line Transit: )Walla Walla and Pasco, Washington)
- CitiBus: (Lubbock, TX)
- Unitrans: (City of Davis, California)
- Rio Vista Delta Breeze: (Rio Vista and 6 surrounding cities in California)
- Tram et Bus de la CUB (Bordeaux, France)
If your town didn’t make it, you’ll have to stick to foot and pedal power for Earth-Day friendly commutes. Meanwhile, you can push your home city to catch up and let its residents harness the awesome power of Google Earth Transit. I’m looking at you, Portland, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago…
