170 Miles of Campaign Trail

Utah politician/BP photog traces proposed Lake Powell pipeline by hike and bike

Lin Alder, sometime BACKPACKER photographer and candidate for the county commissioner seat in Utah’s canyon country near St. George, chose to ditch old-school campaign techniques. To bring attention to water conservation issues, he hiked and biked 170 miles through the desert, tracing the route of the planned Lake Powell pipeline. Along the way, Alder met with his constituency and even hosted outdoor debates to discuss encroaching desert sprawl.

Photographer and activist Blake Gordon went along for the ride, turning Alder’s election bid into a mini documentary. Check it:
