Our take It’s about time augmented reality became a mainstay in the outdoors: The Skyline app uses your phone’s camera to overlay waypoints and navigation arrows onto the landscape you’re seeing. It makes finding your way easier than ever before: Preload a route from ViewRanger, then point your phone’s camera toward the terrain in question and press the “Skyline” button. Blue navigation arrows will begin pointing you in the right direction and—nice touch—labels adhere to the mountains and lakes, essentially bridging the gap between your 2D map and 3D reality. (ViewRanger and Skyline now work with all platforms, iOS and Android.)
Trail cred “We were hiking in Glacier and emerged from the forest into an incredible glacial cirque and I was able to identify each of the pinnacles before us by using Skyline,” one tester says.
