We're rafters. In a thunderstorm, should we stay in the boat (the absolute lowest point around) or pull ashore and get out of the water?

Your question lacks a precise answer, but here are some interesting facts: NOAA data shows that 25% of fatal lightning strikes in 2007occurred on or near water. Rubber rafts, however, are rarely struck by lightning, especially in deep canyons. Still, the Wilderness Medical Society recommends moving well away from water, even rafters, if a lightning storm is near. For more info, check out www.lightningsafety.com.
